SNK Reissues NeoGeo AES Console with Original Cartridge Support

SNK and Plaion are collaborating to re-release the NeoGeo Advanced Entertainment System (AES) console. This new hardware promises "unrivaled authenticity" and full compatibility with original game cartridges, a significant development for enthusiasts.

The NeoGeo AES, originally launched in 1990, was renowned for its faithful arcade game conversions. The updated console is scheduled for release on November 12, with both a standard edition and a 35th Anniversary Edition available for purchase.

Priced at $249.99, £179.99, or €199.99, the console aims to make the system more accessible than its predecessor. Game cartridges will also be sold separately for £69.99 or €79.99, according to VGC.

Modern Enhancements and Original Fidelity

Plaion states the NeoGeo AES+ will include "discrete" quality of life upgrades. These enhancements feature low-latency HDMI output and 1080p resolution, improving compatibility with modern displays. An on-screen BIOS and DIPSwitches, accessible from the console's bottom, will allow instant adjustments for language selection, hardware overclocking, or different display modes. The system also offers low power consumption and permanently saves high scores for each game.

A Legacy of Arcade Power

The original NeoGeo AES was a powerful home console for its era, directly leveraging SNK's successful arcade business. This synergy allowed for nearly identical arcade game conversions, a feat unmatched by rival platforms at the time. However, this fidelity came at a substantial cost. The console retailed for $649 at its 1990 launch, equivalent to over $1200 today, with individual game cartridges priced at approximately $200. This high barrier to entry contributed to the system selling less than one million units worldwide, as reported by VGC.

Reintroducing a Classic

Ben Jones, commercial director of Plaion Replai, commented on the enduring appeal of the NeoGeo. He stated that the system "remains peerless in the eyes of arcade enthusiasts, never accepting less than the authentic arcade experience." Jones further expressed excitement about reintroducing this "legendary system" to modern players "in a way that refuses to compromise on the integrity of the original hardware." Ten NeoGeo games are slated to launch alongside the console, with additional titles and accessories to follow. An Ultimate Edition, bundling all launch games and accessories, is currently available via the Plaion website.

This reissue represents a considered effort to make a historically significant, albeit niche, console accessible to a new generation of players and dedicated enthusiasts. The focus on original cartridge compatibility, combined with thoughtful modern conveniences, aims to honor the NeoGeo's legacy while addressing contemporary user expectations.
