ArcStation Brings Solder-Less PS1 ODE

For retro fans in England and beyond, there is new PlayStation 1 hardware news to keep an eye on, the ArcStation Optical Drive Emulator is now available for pre-order. The unit is designed for the original PlayStation and the smaller PSOne, with a solder-less installation that replaces the console’s original optical drive assembly.

RetroRGB reported the pre-order listing and price, which is around 7,291.20 Ukrainian Hryvnia, or about $165 USD including shipping. That launch price is a pre-order bonus, and later batches are expected to cost more. Shipping is planned for September, or possibly sooner.

The key technical point is that ArcStation claims to emulate the radio frequency, or RF, signal from the CD-ROM assembly itself. In practice, that means the PlayStation should read it much like a physical disc drive, which could help with compatibility compared with some other ODE setups.

There are a couple of limits to note, though. On the PSOne, Virtual Memory Card support is not available, and neither is the option to reset directly to the menu. That is a reminder that even when a mod works across both console revisions, the smaller model can still have hardware-specific restrictions.

For players who have followed PlayStation modding for years, the appeal is clear. Existing options such as PSIO and XStation have helped keep ageing consoles in use, but they often involve more complex installation work. A solder-less ODE lowers that barrier, which may make disc-free play more approachable for more owners.

As with any new hardware project, early buyers will likely wait for hands-on testing before treating it as a sure thing. For now, the ArcStation adds another preservation-minded option for keeping the PlayStation 1 library playable as original disc drives continue to age.
