Saturn Samurai Spirits RPG Hides PS1 Content

In the Sega Saturn scene, a fresh preservation find has put Shinsetsu Samurai Spirits Bushidou Retsuden, also known as Samurai Spirits RPG, back in the spotlight. A modder has found PlayStation-exclusive story content hidden inside the Saturn version, and a new patch now makes it playable.

Modder Bo Bayles, working with game translator The Price of Reason, uncovered the material in the Saturn release. The discovery shows that content long thought to belong only to Sony’s console was already sitting on Sega hardware, waiting to be accessed.

Samurai Spirits RPG launched in 1997 on three platforms, Neo Geo CD, Sega Saturn, and Sony PlayStation. Each version had its own bonus material. The Neo Geo CD release included an exclusive third chapter focused on Hisame Shizumaru. The PlayStation version offered a mode for viewing non-interactive story sequences. The Saturn version, meanwhile, included an interview mode with various characters.

As reported by Time Extension, it was already known that the Saturn’s interview mode could be accessed on PlayStation through a hacked save file. Bayles has now released a patch that does the reverse on Saturn. Players can launch the PlayStation story sequences by selecting “Omake” from the main menu with the A button. The Saturn’s original interview content is still present, accessed by selecting “Omake” while holding L+Start and pressing A.

For retro fans and preservation-minded players, the find is a neat reminder that old games can still hold surprises. It also shows how console versions could mirror each other in ways that were not obvious at the time, especially during the era of the console wars.

For collectors, the patch adds another layer to what a complete Saturn copy of Samurai Spirits RPG can offer. It is no longer just about the disc and inserts, but about the full software experience too. If you want more retro news like this, keep an eye on our News tag for the latest updates.
