Alone in the Dark Creator Launches New Genesis Game with Spinner

Frédérick Raynal, the mind behind Alone in the Dark, is bringing a new game to the Sega Genesis. This isn't just any homebrew title; PopCorn Duel arrives with a custom spinner controller, a bold move for a console with limited peripheral options. A new peripheral for the Sega Genesis is a big deal, especially one that promises arcade-level precision and opens up new gameplay possibilities.

Raynal's project is a remake of his 1988 PC game, PopCorn. It will be funded via a Kickstarter campaign, which launched recently. The game also features a brand-new two-player "Duel" mode, expanding on the original brick-breaker concept.

The inspiration for this ambitious project came from a personal loss. Raynal told Time Extension that his friend, David Mekersa of GameCodeur.fr, approached him about creating a C programming course for the Genesis using SGDK, the Sega Genesis Development Kit. Mekersa suggested adapting an old game, and PopCorn was a perfect fit for a console released the same year.

A Tribute and a New Controller

Raynal began working on the adaptation with didactic code and progressive steps. Sadly, David Mekersa fell ill and passed away before the project was complete. Raynal decided to finish the game as a tribute to his friend, making the project even grander than initially planned.

He realized that brick-breakers are not ideal with a standard joypad. This led him to design the PopCorn Spinner, a new peripheral specifically for the Genesis. Raynal noted that existing Genesis mice are rare, and there were no dedicated spinners for the console. This is where the real innovation comes in.

The Tech Behind the Spin

Raynal designed the electronic circuit, a 3D-printed case, and firmware compatible with the Genesis mouse protocol. He opted for Hall effect sensors over potentiometers, which are common in older paddle controllers like those for the Atari 2600. Potentiometers offer limited rotation, typically 270 degrees, before locking.

Hall effect sensors, combined with a magnet, allow for infinite rotation and extremely precise detection. Raynal’s design boasts a resolution of 4096 steps per turn, providing an arcade-quality experience. This level of precision is unheard of for a new Genesis peripheral and could open doors for other game types, such as Asteroids-style titles, as Raynal himself suggested.

What This Means for Collectors

For collectors, this is a significant development. New, high-quality peripherals for classic consoles are rare. The market for unique, custom hardware bundled with homebrew games has seen steady growth. Think about titles like Tanglewood or Xeno Crisis for the Genesis; their complete-in-box editions often command premium prices, especially with unique packaging or extras.

A complete-in-box PopCorn Duel with its custom PopCorn Spinner could become a highly sought-after item. The scarcity of original Genesis mice, which can fetch hundreds of dollars on the secondary market, makes a modern, high-fidelity alternative very appealing. This spinner offers superior performance and a dedicated purpose, which collectors appreciate.

Expanding Compatibility

Raynal also announced an upcoming USB adapter for the PopCorn Spinner. This adapter will not only allow the spinner to work with PC games but will also enable users to connect their 3- and 6-button Genesis controllers to a PC. This is a smart move, extending the utility of the spinner beyond the Genesis and making it more attractive to a wider audience.

The adapter will be available at a discount for campaign supporters. This cross-platform compatibility adds significant value to the spinner, making it a versatile piece of hardware for retro gaming enthusiasts. It’s a testament to Raynal’s dedication to the project and his understanding of the retro gaming community's needs.

A Legacy Continues

Frédérick Raynal's career spans decades, from Laser on the Sinclair ZX81 to Little Big Adventure and Toy Commander. His return to the Genesis with such a unique project is a testament to his passion for game development and classic hardware. This release honors a friend and pushes the boundaries of what a retro console peripheral can achieve.

The PopCorn Duel Kickstarter campaign is now live, offering a chance to secure this unique game and its innovative controller. This project is more than just a new game; it is a piece of modern retro history in the making, and it’s one I’ll be watching closely.
