Acclaim Returns with Hyperyuki: Snowboard Syndicate

Acclaim is back in the news, and for retro gaming fans in the UK, that is a name with plenty of history. The publisher has announced Hyperyuki: Snowboard Syndicate, a new title developed with Wabisabi Design Inc.

The game is being positioned as a spiritual successor to arcade snowboarding and extreme sports favourites. It draws comparisons with SSX Tricky and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, with a cel-shaded look that also brings Jet Set Radio to mind.

According to Acclaim's official games page, Hyperyuki will include customisable characters and boards, plus a soundtrack shaped to echo early Tony Hawk's Pro Skater-style rhythm and flow. Players will build power and skill by landing tricks, which then unlock faster movement and bigger aerial moves, including a lightning super mode.

There are four modes planned: Challenge, Race, Chill, and Multiplayer. Challenge mode focuses on objectives, item collection, and high scores, while multiplayer support includes eight-player online play and four-player local play, which should suit anyone who still likes a sofa session with friends.

Acclaim's original run lasted from 1987 until its bankruptcy in 2004, and the brand was known for a wide range of releases, including Turok and Shadow Man. The new version of the publisher now faces the familiar challenge of living up to a famous name while building something that stands on its own.
