Square Enix has issued an extraordinary spoiler alert for the HD-2D remakes of Dragon Quest 1 & 2, despite the original NES titles launching nearly four decades ago.

The Japanese developer is treating the classic JRPGs' endings with the same secrecy as brand-new releases, specifically requesting players avoid sharing content beyond Dragon Quest 2's second credits until 29th November 2025.

This unusual approach stems from what Square Enix describes as a "really big surprise" awaiting veteran fans. The company has hinted at "numerous new scenarios" that connect these foundational titles to Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake, which serves as a prequel to the original duo. Consequently, the developer is taking enforcement seriously – violations could result in temporary or permanent suspension from the game.

The guidelines, posted on the official Dragon Quest website (in Japanese 🇯🇵), also ask streamers to voluntarily mark story-heavy sections as containing spoilers. This careful handling demonstrates Square Enix's commitment to preserving the magic for newcomers while rewarding long-time enthusiasts with fresh content. The original Dragon Quest launched in 1986, fundamentally shaping the JRPG genre, while its sequel followed in 1987.

Meanwhile, the Dragon Quest series continues its renaissance with Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake arriving later this year and Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined scheduled for February 2026. This spoiler protection policy, while seemingly excessive for 38-year-old games, reflects Square Enix's confidence that their new narrative additions will genuinely surprise even the most dedicated fans.
