Pokémon Fire Of Sky Brings New Story To Emerald

Pokémon fans in the UK and beyond have a new Emerald ROM hack to keep an eye on, as Pokémon Fire Of Sky reworks Hoenn into a story set before trainers, Poké Balls and the familiar gym battle system.

Developed by Teon, the fan-made project is a short experience, with RetroDodo reporting a playtime of around one to two hours. The story begins in a quiet mountain home, where rampaging Pokémon are causing trouble, and the player teams up with a partner Pokémon to find out why.

Rather than leaning on the standard badge route, Fire Of Sky uses boss battles instead of gyms. It also adds new Pokémon forms, and gives the player’s partner Pokémon the ability to follow them across the overworld, a feature many fans still like to see in official games.

The hack also focuses on convenience. Pokémon heal automatically as the player walks, TMs are reusable, and old moves can be relearned directly from the summary screen. RetroDodo says Teon has balanced the challenge so players should not need to grind heavily, with wild battles as they progress being enough to keep pace.

For anyone wanting to try it, Fire Of Sky must be patched onto a legally owned copy of Pokémon Emerald, then played through a GBA emulator. That is standard for ROM hacks, and it keeps the original game ownership requirement in place while the fan project does its own thing.
