Hyperkin SupaBoy Gets New Colours, Drops Hyper Beach
Hyperkin is refreshing its SupaBoy handheld line, with the Hyper Beach colourway being retired and new shell designs set to arrive. For retro fans in the UK, it is another sign that the direct cartridge handheld still has a place alongside emulation and FPGA devices.
RetroDodo reported that Hyperkin confirmed the blue and pink Hyper Beach shell, which followed the original grey and purple SNES-inspired design, is being phased out. The company said, “We are officially retiring this colourway, and once the remaining units are gone, they are gone. New SupaBoy colours are coming soon, but Hyper Beach is taking one last ride into the neon sunset.”
The SupaBoy first appeared in 2018 and is built for playing original Super Nintendo Entertainment System cartridges on the move. Hyperkin’s own product page says the handheld is designed around physical SNES carts, rather than ROM files or software emulation, which keeps the setup simple for players who want a plug-and-play option.
That puts it in a different lane from handhelds such as the Analogue Pocket, which uses FPGA hardware, and from Android or Linux-based devices that rely on emulation. Hyperkin’s approach is less about flexibility and more about keeping the original cartridge experience intact.
Hyperkin has not named the new colourways yet, but it has said a launch campaign will run in the months before they arrive. RetroDodo also noted that a community reply from Hyperkin mentioned transparent shells, which fits the kind of styling many modding fans still like on handhelds.
For now, the main takeaway is simple, Hyperkin is keeping the SupaBoy in play and giving it a fresh look. If you follow retro handheld news, you can keep an eye on our News tag for more updates as the new designs are announced.
