Fatal Fury History Book Lands from Bitmap Books
For retro game fans in the UK, there is a new book worth a look, Bitmap Books has released Fatal Fury/Garou Densetsu: The Ultimate History, a 460-page volume on SNK’s arcade fighting series. The book covers the franchise from its 1991 debut and was first reported by Bleeding Cool.
The title is available in two editions, a Standard Edition priced at $49 and a Collector’s Edition at $76. According to Bitmap Books, the book includes detailed notes, interview quotes, and previously unseen sketches and art.
Fatal Fury, known in Japan as Garou Densetsu, helped establish the NEOGEO as a premium home system for arcade players. The series has seven main entries, including Fatal Fury: Wild Ambition, Fatal Fury: First Contact, and Garou: Mark of the Wolves, and it remains part of SNK’s wider fighting game legacy.
Bitmap Books says it was given access to SNK’s archive of concept sketches, promotional illustrations, and cover art. The book also features interviews with pixel artists Hitoshi Okamoto, Youichiro Soeda, and Nobuyuki Kuroki, plus planner and designer Takeshi Kimura. Yasuyuki Oda, Chief Producer of SNK Fighting Games, also wrote a foreword.
The volume also connects Fatal Fury with other SNK series, including The King of Fighters and Art of Fighting. It presents each game’s history alongside sprite sheets, screenshots, and artwork by Shinkiro, TONKO, and Eiji Shiroi, giving readers a clear record of how the series developed over time.
This is a strong addition for anyone interested in arcade history, SNK, or game preservation. For more RetroShell coverage of similar stories, see the news tag, and for the publisher’s own details, visit Bitmap Books or SNK’s official press page.
