Escape 2049
French developer OrionSoft has unveiled Escape 2049, a new cinematic platformer for the Sega Genesis and Game Boy Advance. Funding is currently underway via Kickstarter, with physical cartridges planned for collectors.
A New Dystopian Adventure for Retro Hardware
The retro homebrew scene continues to thrive with the announcement of Escape 2049, a new hybrid platformer developed by French studio OrionSoft. Designed specifically for the Sega Genesis (Mega Drive) and Game Boy Advance, the title promises to blend cinematic storytelling with run-and-gun action. The project is currently seeking funding via Kickstarter, and a PC version via Steam is also in the works. This announcement adds to a growing list of new releases and unofficial Genesis ports that keep the console's library fresh.
Story: The Fight Continues
Narratively, Escape 2049 serves as a direct sequel to the developer’s previous title, Escape 2042. While the first game followed the hacker Shun, who exposed government corruption only to be thrown into Bulor 24 Prison, the sequel shifts perspective to his wife, Elena. Picking up the torch years later, Elena finds herself targeted by AI surveillance systems and eventually imprisoned in a high-security facility. Therefore, players will guide her through a dystopian landscape as she fights for freedom and attempts to finish what her husband started.

Gameplay: Run, Gun, and Hack
OrionSoft describes the gameplay as a mix of genres, drawing comparisons to classics like Contra, Oddworld, and Another World. The game spans four distinct worlds featuring twelve levels and twelve bosses. Meanwhile, environments range from cold prison blocks to forests, deserts, and even an asteroid setting.
Mechanically, players can expect a variety of challenges:
- Combat: Run 'n gun style shooting with multi-directional fire and grenades for clearing obstacles.
- Stealth & Tech: Mechanics involve camera disabling, computer hacking, and hunting for keycards.
- Visuals: A surprisingly modern pixel art style pushes the limits of the target 16-bit and handheld hardware.
Physical Editions and Demo
For physical collectors, OrionSoft is producing cartridge releases for both the Sega Genesis and Game Boy Advance. These releases come complete with cases and manuals. In addition, a ROM-only tier is available for those who prefer playing on flash carts or emulators. A deluxe reissue of the prequel, Escape 2042, is also available for backers who want the complete saga. This follows a trend of new physical releases for classic portables, such as the recently announced new Game Boy platformer from Vault Interactive.
The Kickstarter campaign is currently active. Furthermore, a free demo is available for those who want to test the gameplay mechanics before backing the project. The community's creativity extends beyond new games, with fans also producing imaginative Genesis ROM hacks of existing titles.
