Tekken Team Changes Continue at Bandai Namco
In Bandai Namco, the Tekken series has seen another major change, with Tekken 8 director Kouhei Ikeda announcing his departure from the studio. It is the latest in a run of senior exits for one of fighting games’ longest-running names, and it lands at a time when the series is already under close scrutiny from fans.
Ikeda’s exit, reported by Game Rant, is the third key departure for the franchise in less than a year. He had served as game director on both Tekken 7 and Tekken 8, and his Bandai Namco career began with Soulcalibur IV.
Before Ikeda, producer Yohei Shimbori left in September 2025. Franchise figurehead Katsuhiro Harada, who had been with Tekken for 30 years, announced his retirement from the series in December 2025. Harada has since started a new studio with former SNK developers, although it has not been confirmed whether Ikeda or Shimbori will join him.
Ikeda said he was happy to have worked as game director and described his time at Bandai Namco as a lifelong dream. He also thanked the remaining developers and spoke of passing the baton, but he did not give a reason for leaving. For a series built on long memory and careful iteration, that kind of turnover matters, because so much of a fighting game’s feel lives in experience that is rarely written down.
Fan reaction has been mixed, with many players treating the departures as a sad moment for the series. The community has also continued to criticise Tekken 8 for balance issues and its Rage Arts mechanic, and Season 3 drew a significant review bomb in March 2026. That leaves Bandai Namco with a familiar challenge, keeping the game competitive and popular while also answering long-running concerns from its core audience.
Even so, Tekken 8 remains a major part of the fighting game scene, with strong attention at events such as Evo Japan 2026 alongside Street Fighter 6 and Guilty Gear Strive.
