Switch Owners Face Mortal Kombat 4 Online Ban

Digital Eclipse confirms 15 of 23 Mortal Kombat classics ship with rollback online play across PS, Xbox and PC, while MK4 lacks online on the original Switch. Launching 30 October, a new 16-player Online Arcade Mode is promised shortly after release.

Switch Owners Face Mortal Kombat 4 Online Ban

Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection fans can finally see which classic titles will support online multiplayer when the compilation launches tomorrow.

Digital Eclipse has confirmed that 15 of the collection's 23 games will feature rollback netcode for smooth online battles, though Nintendo Switch owners face one notable exception.

The developers revealed that Mortal Kombat 4 won't support online play on the original Nintendo Switch due to technical limitations, though local multiplayer remains fully functional. Fortunately, the upcoming Switch 2 version doesn't share this restriction. Meanwhile, all other platforms including PlayStation, Xbox and PC will enjoy the complete online experience across the first four mainline Mortal Kombat titles and their various iterations.

Digital Eclipse's comprehensive launch FAQ details exactly which versions support online play: the arcade, SNES and Genesis editions of Mortal Kombat 1-3, plus Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 (including the rare Wavenet arcade version) and Mortal Kombat Trilogy for PlayStation. The handheld titles, however, won't feature any online functionality at launch.

Furthermore, the initial release will focus on casual quick matches rather than ranked competition or cross-platform play. Nevertheless, Digital Eclipse promises something rather special in the pipeline - an ambitious Online Arcade Mode scheduled to arrive within weeks of launch.

This innovative lobby system will support up to 16 players in private or public rooms where multiple games can run simultaneously. Imagine creating your personal Mortal Kombat arcade where friends can spectate or compete in classic 'winner stays' queues across different titles. The developers claim this represents their most ambitious online implementation to date, allowing players to host multiple instances of the same game within a single lobby.

The Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection arrives digitally on 30th October for Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PlayStation 4/5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam, with physical editions following in December. While the initial online offering might seem limited, the promised Online Arcade Mode could revolutionise how we experience classic fighting game compilations.
