Sonic The Hedgehog Port Announced for Commodore Amiga

The developer behind OutRun Amiga Edition is bringing Sega's blue blur to the classic computer.

HOT NEWS as Sonic The Hedgehog is in the works for the Amiga by Reassembler!

Reassembler, the developer responsible for the impressive OutRun Amiga Edition, has announced his next ambitious project: porting Sonic The Hedgehog to the Commodore Amiga. The announcement was made in a development video posted in November 2025, which shows early comparisons between the Amiga build and the original Mega Drive / Genesis classic.

This isn't the first time a classic game has found a new home on different hardware. We've seen similar passion projects, like the unofficial *Bad Dudes Vs Dragon Ninja* port for the Genesis / Mega Drive, which show the dedication of fans to expand gaming libraries on their favourite platforms. The Sonic project, however, is tackling a much bigger technical challenge by moving from dedicated console hardware to the more general-purpose Amiga architecture.

🎮 Porting a Legend- Target Hardware: Amiga 500 (1MB Chip RAM) & Amiga 1200- Original Platform: Sega Mega Drive / Genesis (1991)- Developer: Reassembler (reassembler68k)

Reassembler, known online as reassembler68k, is targeting two key Amiga models. The primary goal is a version for the Amiga 500 with 1MB of chip RAM, using the original OCS chipset. A separate, more advanced version is planned for the Amiga 1200, which should leverage its AGA graphics for a result closer to the 16-bit Sega original. The technical feasibility of running a game as fast and colourful as Sonic on the older A500 hardware is already sparking debate within the Amiga community.

The Technical Hurdle

Porting a game designed for the Mega Drive / Genesis's dedicated graphics and sound processors to the Amiga's different architecture is no small feat. The original Sonic relied heavily on hardware scrolling and a specific colour palette. The development video shows Reassembler's progress on replicating Green Hill Zone, with work ongoing on sprite animation, parallax scrolling, and that all-important sense of speed. His previous work, OutRun Amiga Edition, is available for download on itch.io and serves as a promising indicator of his skill in squeezing performance out of the classic machine.

For those wanting to follow the project closely, Reassembler maintains a YouTube channel for development updates and has a Patreon and Discord for supporters. The project joins a niche but active scene of developers porting games to platforms they were never designed for, much like the C64 port of the Amstrad classic *Oh Mummy*. It's a fascinating test of what these older systems can really do when pushed by modern coding techniques.

No release date has been set, but the announcement alone has given the Amiga community a new technical marvel to anticipate. Can the A500 handle the speed of Sonic? We'll have to wait and see.
