The Sega 32X was an add-on unit launched in 1994 designed for the Sega Megadrive/Genesis designed to give the console more power (and a longer shelf life). It is fair to say in hindsight that it was not a Sega success on a number of levels. It sold only ~800,000 units – versus around 42 million units of the original console. Due to the low adoption, only 40 games were made across all of the regions.
Unlike the games released for other consoles, Sega made the baffling decision to make the boxes for the 32x from cardboard instead of the hard shells that protected the games from the other systems. They were prone to ripping, being crushed and easily damaged from day to day use. The games are now over 25 years old and cardboard does not age well.
