Néro & Sci Math Game Lands on Switch
From Oyonnax, France, Souris-Lab is bringing Néro & Sci ∫ Integral Edition to Nintendo Switch worldwide on 27 May. The maths-based platformer is aimed at players aged 13 and up, and was first noted by Nintendo in 2021.
The game is built around making mathematical concepts feel more approachable through play. Rather than presenting problems like a classroom exercise, it uses platforming, puzzles, numbers, shapes, and mathematical symbols to frame the action.
The core idea is to solve middle school to high school-level maths puzzles through experimentation. Souris-Lab says the game takes inspiration from Mario Bros, and it offers both solo play and local co-operative modes.
Development involved educational researchers from the IREM of Lyon, who validated the educational potential of the concept and its mechanics. The project also connects to the French Ministry of Education’s Edu Up programme, while an educational version for middle and high schools is expected later this year.
Creator Caroline Martinand said she wanted to show players her own view of mathematics from a younger age, including its colours and mysteries. She described the aim as making a game that is accessible, intellectually stimulating, and still fun, which fits neatly with the kind of inventive spirit retro fans often appreciate.
