Gargoyle's Quest Romhack Adds Full Super Game Boy Support

A new romhack for the classic Game Boy title Gargoyle's Quest adds full Super Game Boy compatibility with a custom border and colour palette. The enhancement uses assets from the original NES version and SNK Vs. Capcom Chaos to align the portable adaptation more closely with its console.

Gargoyle’s Quest (レッドアリーマー 魔界村外伝) SGB Enhanced (Game Boy) Romhack

A new romhack has been released that finally gives the Game Boy classic Gargoyle's Quest the full Super Game Boy treatment it never officially received. The patch, titled Gargoyle's Quest SGB Enhanced, adds a custom colour palette and a bespoke border, transforming the 1990 portable adventure into a showcase title for Nintendo's 1994 SNES peripheral.

📜 The Super Game Boy's Unique LegacyReleased in 1994, the Super Game Boy was a cartridge adapter for the SNES that allowed Game Boy games to be played on a television. Unlike later emulation-based solutions, it contained actual Game Boy hardware inside. Nintendo officially supported it with enhanced borders and palettes for only 47 games, leaving many classics like Gargoyle's Quest with basic colorization.

According to the details on ROM Hack Plaza, the hack was created by Hammer KeyBoard Studios and Ry0G4_. It aims to bridge the gap between the Game Boy version and its 1990 NES predecessor by directly importing tiles and colour schemes from the original 8-bit console game. The project also draws colours from [SNK](https://shop.retroshell.com/product-category/neo-geo/) vs. Capcom: Chaos on the Neo Geo to complete its palette. The result is a version that feels closer to a direct port, moving beyond the Super Game Boy's default four-colour selections.

📊 Super Game Boy By The Numbers- 1994: Year the Super Game Boy peripheral was released for the SNES.- 47: Number of Game Boy titles that received official, enhanced Super Game Boy support from Nintendo.- 32: Simultaneous colors the Super Game Boy could display from a palette of 32,768, compared to the original Game Boy's 4 shades of green.- 1990: Release year of both the NES Gargoyle's Quest and the Game Boy version this hack enhances.

For collectors and enthusiasts, this hack addresses a long-standing omission. While later Game Boy titles like Donkey Kong Land and Pokémon Yellow featured elaborate custom borders and palettes for the Super Game Boy, many earlier classics did not. Gargoyle's Quest, a seminal title that blended action-platforming with RPG elements, was left with only basic SGB colourisation. This new patch effectively retrofits the game into the library of enhanced titles, offering a visual experience that aligns with what Capcom might have produced had the game been developed a few years later.

The patch is available now and can be applied to the “Gargoyle's Quest (USA, Europe)” ROM. It represents another step in the preservation and enhancement of gaming's portable history, allowing one of the Game Boy's most ambitious early titles to be enjoyed with the visual flair its gameplay always deserved.
