Sonic CD Remake Claimed by Former Sega Exec

In the retro gaming scene, news out of Sega often lands with extra weight, and this one centres on Sonic CD. A former Sega executive has reportedly claimed that a remake of the Mega CD classic is in development, according to Time Extension.

The report does not name the former executive or give full context for the claim, so it should be treated with caution for now. Even so, it is the sort of comment that gets fans talking, especially when it concerns a game with such a strong reputation among Sonic the Hedgehog followers.

Sonic CD first arrived in 1993 for the Mega CD, known as the Sega CD in North America. It was a technical showcase for the add-on, with full-motion video cutscenes, a CD-quality soundtrack, and the game’s time travel system, which let players move between past, present, and future versions of each zone.

The Mega CD itself never became a huge commercial success, but Sonic CD has remained one of its most fondly remembered releases. Its dual soundtracks, one for Japan and Europe, and another for North America, are still a talking point for fans, and the game’s art direction has helped it stand apart in the series.

Sega has already brought Sonic CD back before, most notably with the 2011 release handled by Christian Whitehead. That version added widescreen support and other improvements, showing that the game can adapt well to modern platforms. A full remake would be a bigger step, though, with the usual question of how closely it would stick to the original design.

For now, the claim remains unconfirmed, but it does fit a wider pattern of interest in Sega’s back catalogue. If you want more retro gaming news as it lands, keep an eye on our News tag for the latest updates.
