Evercade Announces NEOGEO Arcade 4 and Activision Collection 3
Evercade has announced two new cartridge collections slated for release in 2026: NEOGEO Arcade 4 and Activision Collection 3. For those who appreciate the distinct arcade experience of SNK's MVS (Multi Video System) hardware, this NEOGEO collection provides a welcome opportunity to revisit these games on a dedicated handheld or home console.
Each physical cartridge will retail for approximately 24.99 euros, 19.99 British pounds, or 29.99 US dollars. The NEOGEO Arcade 4 collection will feature eight arcade games from SNK's extensive library. These include Metal Slug 4 (2002, Neo Geo MVS), King of the Monsters (1991, Neo Geo MVS), and Fatal Fury Special (1993, Neo Geo MVS). The Activision Collection 3 will add thirteen more titles from Activision's early catalogue, such as Barnstorming, Chopper Command, and Kaboom!, primarily from the Atari era.
Revisiting SNK's Arcade Legacy
The inclusion of titles like Metal Slug 4 is significant. While not as universally acclaimed as its predecessors, it continues the run-and-gun tradition with music by composers such as Toshikazu Tanaka. Fatal Fury Special, on the other hand, represents a high point for SNK's fighting game output, featuring a refined combat system and memorable character designs, with music largely by Masahiko Hataya, according to Evercade retro gaming consoles. These games were cornerstones of the arcade scene in Japan and beyond, defining a particular era of coin-operated entertainment.
What this hints at, for the scene, is a continued commitment to making a broader range of classic Japanese arcade titles accessible through physical means. Many of these games, especially those from the NEOGEO MVS, were expensive to collect in their original form, according to Activision official company website. Providing them on a modern, affordable platform helps new players discover the work of developers like SNK and composers who crafted these soundscapes.
The Activision Collection and Broader Preservation
The Activision Collection 3, with its focus on early Atari-era titles, complements the NEOGEO offerings by preserving a different, yet equally important, segment of video game history. These games often represent foundational design principles that influenced countless later releases. The Evercade platform, by bundling these diverse collections, serves as a valuable tool for historical preservation, ensuring these titles remain playable and discoverable for future generations.
This initiative by Evercade continues a trend of bringing historically significant software to new audiences. The 2026 release date suggests a carefully planned rollout, allowing for thorough development and quality assurance. Enthusiasts can look forward to adding these new cartridges to their collections, further expanding the playable library of classic games.
