Cocytus Ruins Brings Lovecraft to C64

For retro fans in the UK and beyond, the Commodore 64 keeps turning up new surprises. Cocytus Ruins: Ph'nglui Mglw'nafh, a Lovecraftian roguelike from developer cristiancubillos, is now available on itch.io.

The game is a tactical role-playing dungeon crawler built natively for C64 hardware. Players move through shifting, cyclopean corridors filled with cultists and ancient horrors, with the action framed by a strong sense of cosmic dread.

A key part of the design is a sanity meter, which affects both survival and the story. As the protagonist's mind frays, the text changes too, adding another layer to each run through the ruins.

There are three archetypal classes to choose from before heading into the abyss. One of them, the Defector Cultist, works as a Merchant, letting players spend gold between floors on forbidden potions or permanent combat upgrades.

It is another example of how far homebrew development on the Commodore 64 can go. If you follow C64 news regularly, you can keep up with more releases on our News tag, and see more machine-specific coverage in our retro news feed.
