64DD Spotted in Akihabara - But Is £1,800/€2,050/$2,400 a Fair Price?

Reddit user melvin1998 found a complete Nintendo 64DD in an Akihabara retro shop for ¥327,800 (£1,811). With fewer than 15,000 ever sold, is that price reasonable?

Nintendo 64DD spotted in an Akihabara retro game shop

Reddit user melvin1998 found something special during a trip to Japan - a complete Nintendo 64DD in a small Akihabara retro shop. The asking price? ¥327,800 - that's roughly £1,811.

"I did not buy it as it was too expensive for me," they admitted. The post has since picked up nearly 400 upvotes and almost 40 comments, with collectors debating whether that's actually a reasonable price.

What Even Is a 64DD?

Nintendo's disk drive add-on launched in Japan in December 1999 - right at the end of the N64's life. It flopped. Fewer than 15,000 units ever sold.

The magnetic disks held 64MB, which was massive for the time. Nintendo had plans for online gaming, user-generated content, even a Mario Paint sequel. Most of it never happened.

Is It Worth It?

Complete 64DD units are genuinely rare. I've seen them go for anywhere from £800 to over £2,000 depending on condition. The Akihabara unit appears boxed, which adds value. If it's got the Randnet modem and a few games? That price starts looking less outrageous.

Animal Crossing started life as a 64DD title. So did Ocarina of Time's Master Quest. Both eventually made it to other platforms, but finding one of these in the wild is still the dream for serious collectors.

Just maybe bring a bigger budget next time.
