26-Year-Old Smash Bros Reveals Its Skeleton Army

The iconic Super Smash Bros Nintendo 64 intro has received a terrifying makeover that reveals the game's hidden skeletal models.

Over 26 years since the classic fighter's debut, a creative modder has replaced the familiar characters with their bone-chilling skeleton forms, creating what can only be described as a haunting alternative to the beloved opening sequence.

Supper Mario Broth recently showcased this unsettling reinterpretation that transforms Mario, Donkey Kong, Link, Pikachu, Fox and Yoshi into full-fledged skeletons. Meanwhile, Samus appears as a silhouette inside her suit, and Kirby becomes a faceless entity reminiscent of the Slenderman legend. The cheerful, action-packed music remains unchanged, creating a bizarre contrast with the macabre visuals.

This creative modification exploits an interesting technical aspect of the original Nintendo 64 game. When characters suffer damage from electrical attacks, their skeletal structures become visible beneath their models. These skeletons aren't tied to specific animations but can be toggled on and off at any time, including during cutscenes.

The most chilling moment occurs when a skeletal Link stares directly into the camera, his empty eye sockets emphasising the complete absence of eyeballs. It's a genuinely unsettling sight that transforms the nostalgic intro into something straight out of a horror game. The modification demonstrates how even the most cheerful retro games can reveal surprising depth when viewed through a different lens.

Super Smash Bros for Nintendo 64 originally launched in 1999 and established the template for one of Nintendo's most successful fighting franchises. This skeleton mod serves as a fascinating reminder of the technical innovations that made the original game so groundbreaking, while also showing how creative fans continue to find new ways to experience classic titles.
